John Phillip Couden 80, of Peoria passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017 at home. John was born to Trevert D. and Christine (Miles) Couden on September 20, 1937 in Vermont, IL. John married Doris Bruce on July 7, 1959 in Chicago, IL. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2001. He is survived by his five daughters, Amy Couden, Jill (Gary) Strait, Jane Martin, Janice (Hugh) Pierson, and Myra (Dan) McGann; grandchildren Nicholas Martin, Erin Murphy, Ashley Martin, Emily Martin, Mike (Lucy) Pierson, Tim Pierson, Heather (Mike) Huber and Megan McGann; four great-grandchildren, Lydia, Bradley, Ryanne and Dylan; and son-in-law Ron Murphy. John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Trevert and David.
Upon completion of high school, John attended Bradley University in the Business Administration program. He then went on to work at Caterpillar in Peoria, working his way up the ladder. He started on June 7, 1956 as an apprentice in Tool Design and retired in May, 1999 from Purchasing. He also owned and operated Couden's Standard Station in Bellevue, IL in the early 1960's. John was a founding alderman for the City of West Peoria, also serving as Chairman of the Transportation Committee. He was a member of the West Peoria Resident's Association. During his later years, he enjoyed volunteering many hours at the Peoria Habitat For Humanity, ReStore.
John will be remembered as a kind, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He took special pride in his West Peoria home and the loving memories his family created there. A visitation will be held at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with a funeral service immediately following. A private cremation service will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat For Humanity (Midwest Affilate), and the West Peoria Fire Department.
