Lynwood Harriman Obituary

Lynwood P. Harriman, age 90, of Fairhaven, died Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the widower of Donna E. Harriman with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.

Born in Cornish, Maine, a son of the late Lester B. and Marguerite (Pendexter) Harriman, he lived in Maine for many years before moving to Fairhaven in 1958.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of Colby College in 1949 and earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Maine, Orono. He was a devoted communicant of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a former lay Eucharistic minister.

Mr. Harriman had a successful career as an educator beginning as High School Principal at Dennysville, Mattawamkeag and Hodgdon High Schools in Maine, then Superintendent of Schools for the Ashland Community School District in Maine and retired in 1987 as Superintendent of Schools in Fairhaven for nearly 30 years.

His professional associations include, Past President of Aroostook County Teacher's Association, Past President of Old Colony Superintendent's Association, Executive Committee Mass School Superintendent's Association, American Association of School Administrators, Fairhaven Rotary Club Charter Member and 2nd President, Paul Harris Fellow and Senior Active Member.

He served on many fraternal organizations including Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Colby College; Member and Past Master of George H. Taber Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Fairhaven; Affiliated Past Master Abraham Howland Jr. Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in New Bedford; Metacomet Daylight Lodge in Taunton; and holder of the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal. He was Past District Deputy Grand Master, New Bedford Masonic District; Past President of District Deputy Grand Master's Association of Mass; Member and Past High Priest of Fairhaven, Wareham, and Adoniram Royal Arch Chapters; Past District Deputy Grand High Priest, Third Capitular District of Mass and Past Deputy Grand High Priest, Grand Chapter of Mass; Holder of Benjamin Hurd distinguished Service Medal. He was Member and Past Illustrious Master of New Bedford Council, Royal and Select Master Masons; Member and Past Commander of Sutton Commandery #16, Knights Templar, New Bedford; Past Director of Masonic Education for Grand Lodge of Mass, Boston; Member of Knights of the York Cross of Honor; Past Sovereign, Bay State Conclave, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine; Past Most Wise Master, St. Andrew Chapter, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Wareham; Member Colonial Council No. 19, Knights Masons; Past Patron, Gifford Chapter No. 105, Order of the Eastern Star, Fairhaven; and Agawam Chapter No. 121, Marion, Order of the Eastern Star.

He leaves one son, Mark E. Harriman and his wife Marie of California and one daughter, Lynda D. Racine and her husband Andrew of Fairhaven; one brother, William C. Harriman of Colorado; seven grandchildren, Rachael E. Politzer, Adrienne P. Lill, Sarah L. Przystarz, Kyle R., Andrea L. and Luke A. Racine and Colby Harriman; six great-grandsons, Benjamin, Zachary and Nekoda Przystarz, Oliver and Hudson Politzer and Noah Lill; and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Peter B. Harriman and brother of the late Mary Trask.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 4 to 8pm in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. His Funeral Mass with Requiem Eucharist will be held Monday, November 27, 2017 at 10:00 am in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 169 Belleville Rd., New Bedford followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
