Timothy Graham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2017.

Timothy Robert Graham, of Greenwich, CT, died peacefully at home November 21, 2017. The cause of death was lung cancer.
Tim was born on March 27, 1950, and enjoyed a full and accomplished life. He graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School, Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and Fordham Law School, where he was the Law Review Editor. Following his law school graduation, Tim embarked on a distinguished career in New York, first as an associate at Lord Day & Lord. He became partner at Alexander & Green and then at Nixon Hargrave, involved primarily in business law, general corporate matters, and the restructuring of troubled companies.
In 1991, Tim joined a private equity investment firm specializing in media and telecommunications, the predecessor to Winstar Communications, where Tim was General Counsel and Executive Vice President from 1994 to 2002. He was with Winstar from its startup phase through its peak of 5,000 employees around the world. One highlight during those years was advocating for a U.S. Supreme Court decision supporting the development of fixed wireless as a viable communications medium. Since 2003, Tim had been a restructuring consultant, involved in the wind-down and sale of insurance and reinsurance companies. He held the roles of chief restructuring officer, principal operating officer, and similar leadership positions at companies in the U.S., Bermuda, England, and Australia, as well as serving on the boards of several reinsurance companies.
Tim was active in many organizations in Greenwich. He was elected to the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting in 2010, serving until 2014. He was a member of the Finance Committee of St. Mary Church for several years. In addition, he was involved in the Greenwich Boy Scouts, Troop 9, where he co-led a 100-mile hike in Philmont, NM with many scouts, including his son Will. An avid athlete since his college football years, Tim was a member of the Men's Tennis and Paddle Tennis Leagues at The Milbrook Club.
Tim's true pride and joy was his family: his wife, Annmarie, and their two sons, Robert and Will. Determined to fulfill a longtime dream, Tim took both of his sons on an African safari in Tanzania in December 2016. He was known for his integrity, his sense of humor, and his devotion to his family and friends.
Tim is survived by his wife of 24 years, Annmarie, and sons Robert and Will; brothers Patrick Graham of Delray Beach, FL; R. Michael Graham of Virginia Beach, VA; and sisters Joanne Graham of New York, NY and Greenwich, CT, and Tracy Baird of Darien, CT. He is also survived by his nephews Darryl, Jeffrey, Douglas, Andrew and Matthew Graham, Ryan Baird, and niece, Megan Baird.
Visitation will be at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Greenwich, CT, Sunday, November 26, from 5:00-8:00 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT, on Monday, November 27th, at 10:00 am.

We'd lost touch over the years, but a couple of mutual friends got us back in contact through our Georgetown Class Reuinion. I'm glad we had some last messages.

Tim was very good to me when I was a junior associate at Lord Day and Lord. I still remember a giant snowstorm in New York when he took me out for a snowball fight. He was a funny guy, a warm human being. We lost touch over the years but when I heard of his passing all these fond memories came back. I won't forget Tim and I wish his family all the best in this difficult time.

I just heard Tim died, so young, so surprised. We played football together at Georgetown, After college, I saw him in New York, and he came to Tulsa to see me. More than anything, I loved his exuberance. I remember his excitement in showing me the gorgeous library at the University Club in New York, I learned how much he loved beauty. I can relate to his bonding experience with his sons, taking them on an African safari, I did the same with my son. Tim was easy to love, and so is his memory. I'm so glad he was blessed by two good looking sons, lovely wife, and a career as a leader in his field. I'll always remember him.

I am so sorry to hear of Tim's passing. I did not know he was ill. I used to enjoy talking to him on the train when we bumped into each other, and have lots of good memories of play with the boys. I will miss him a lot.

Annmarie, Robert and Will--I had the pleasure of working with your husband/father at Winstar. He was a wonderful boss and a tremendous mentor. I had been in touch with him only sporadically since our Winstar years, but will always remember him fondly. I am so very sorry for your loss.

To Tim's family. I was lucky to have known Tim as a classmate at Prep and at Fordham Law School, and as his outside counsel when he was at Winstar. He was a great guy, I will always remember his ever present smile. I am sorry and sad to hear of his passing.

Dear Annmaire, Robert and Will,
I am so sorry for this devastating loss. I had the privilege of knowing Tim as a teammate and friend at Georgetown, and saw him in church often on Sundays. Sometimes God takes the best of us too early. A fine man of character and humor. My deepest sympathies.
