Marilyn J. Smith, 79 of Temple, joined her husband in their Heavenly home on November 21. She died of a broken heart after losing her husband, James just two weeks prior. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 21, 2017. She is survived by her Son, Eric Smith (Dea Young-Smith) and her granddaughters, China Young and Morgan Smith. She is also survived by her Brother, Roger Newcomer (Marian), Sisters Martha Arneson (Harold) and Mary Newcomer. Marilyn also leaves behind three Step-children in James O. Smith, Jr. (Roseann), Sherri White (Bill) and Helen Marie Berry (Keith). Other grandchildren include, Christy Funk, Heather Severance, Wyatt Smith, Diana Blake Jones, Kelly Eaton and Jill Berry. She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Marilyn was born March, 30, 1938, to Llewellyn and Martha Newcomer in Freeport, Illinois. As a young woman, she attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and enjoyed traveling internationally. In the mid-1960's, she moved to Denver, CO where she met James at a Fiddle Steppers Square Dancing class. James asked her to dance and they were partners on the dance floor and in life from then on.
Marilyn was an avid fan of sports and loved cheering for many teams including the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs. She enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia and going to garage sales.
Marilyn will be remembered for her caring spirit, thoughtfulness and her eagerness to help those in need. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meadow Oaks Baptist Church or Cancer Survivors' Fund at cancersurvivorsfund.org. Services for Marilyn Smith will be held on Sunday, November 26, at 2:00pm at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, Temple. A visitation will be held from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday, November 25, 2017 also at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.
