Elizabeth Cloud Monroe, 66, passed away Thursday morning in Winston-Salem, NC, where she had lived most of her life. She attended Summit School, Wiley Middle School, and graduated from Salem Academy before moving to Massachusetts to earn a Bachelor's Degree, cum laude, in Art History from Mt. Holyoke, the first of the Seven Sisters colleges.
While living in New York City, Cloud worked as a buyer for Allied Stores, traveling the world on buying tours. She cherished the memories of those work trips, especially the trip to China.
Her family connections in Winston-Salem brought her back to Winston Salem. She extended her education by studying computer programming at Forsyth Technical Community College, after which she enrolled at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.
That degree opened her eyes and heart to serving youth. For several years, Cloud worked at CenterPoint as a respected licensed Clinical Social Worker in the assessment of appropriate treatment for children, and then was a Clinical Child Therapist on the Trauma Team. As a School Social Worker for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, she spent 25 years working with students at Parkland and North Forsyth High Schools. She deeply believed this work was her true calling, and she truly loved the students she helped. Although she had no children of her own, she felt like she had over 200 children throughout her professional life.
Throughout her life, Cloud adored the arts, especially theater and movies. Her personal art collection evidenced her continuing love and patronage of the Visual Arts. She gave continuing support to a number of the local Performing Arts organizations, and never gave up her dream to be on stage herself.
Her love of travel, especially cruises, took her to many places domestically and internationally. On one trip, she was introduced to the St. Joseph's Indian School. Her support of which gave her the joy of helping youths even farther afield. Cloud loved to share her travel stories and dreams of places she always wanted to visit.
A lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Cloud was the daughter of the late John H. and Elizabeth "Boo" Monroe of Winston-Salem. She is survived by her brothers Thomas Guy Monroe of Alaska and John H. Monroe, Jr, his wife Cindy, and their daughter Camille (all of California). Many friends will miss her smile and the twinkle in her eyes.
A celebration of Cloud's life will be held in the spring.
Instead of gifts or flowers, her wish is for people to help others, through service or donations to a favorite charity.
