I was a Canal Zone kid when I walked into your classroom 30 years ago, Mr. Berneche. You (quite patiently) taught me how to look deeper than the written word. You showed me that, in writing, meaning is everything. Thank you so very kindly, Mr. Berneche. -a former student

You lead a very interesting life Uncle Joe. I'm glad I was able to see you one more time with my family a little over a year ago.

Joe was my husband's father. I was so fortunate to have met him several years ago and share his love of literature. He was such a fascinating man, having traveled to many places and enjoyed his long life. He was a deep thinker and student of philosophy throughout his life. He will be deeply missed.
