Robert Gerald Walker, 80, of San Angelo, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017 in Waco, Texas. He was born to the late, Robert Joseph Walker and Erie Mae Taylor Walker on March 6, 1937 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He married Betty Jean Engle on August 30, 1956 in Holmes County, Mississippi. Robert retired from the United States Air Force after almost 20 years' service, as Master Sergeant. He served in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze Star among various other commendations throughout his military career, including serving during the Cuban Missile Conflict within the Intelligence Division. He was stationed in various places including Alaska, England and San Antonio before moving to San Angelo. Robert was an extremely patriotic man, who continued to serve after retirement as an instructor with ROTC. Robert was an avid football fan and enjoyed his time as a football official. He also enjoyed bowling and remained on a league for many years. Robert's sense of country, family and independence will be missed greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents (listed above); and sister, Laverne Duffy.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Betty Jean Walker; daughters, Debi King, Karen Bloom and her husband, Billy, and Patti Stooksberry and her husband, Ronnie; grandchildren, Kelly King, Tomi Jo Garza, Kyle King, Sam Wesley, Andi Rae Rios, Clay Bloom, Katie Westbrook, Abigail Bloom, Kealeah Bloom, and Melissa Bloom; 11 great grandchildren and one on the way; sisters, Betty Cumbie and Sue Powers; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church Missions at 3980 West Houston Harte Expressway, San Angelo, Texas 76901. A special thank you to St. Gabriel's Hospice in San Angelo and Providence Hospice of Waco for the exceptional care provided to Robert and the whole family.
All friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of his life at his church home, Westside Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Ronnie Stooksberry, A.J. Rios, Marciano Garza, Kyle King, Kelly King, and Clay Bloom will serve as pallbearers. Adam Wesley and Travis Westbrook will serve as honorary pallbearers.
