James Eller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2017.

James Neal Eller passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at his home in Canton, Georgia after a rapidly deteriorating diagnosis of cancer of the esophagus that had spread to his liver.

Born in Kennesaw in 1945, he graduated with honors from North Cobb High School. As a young man, Neal was involved with Kennesaw Mountain Beagle Club, Kennesaw First Baptist Church, and explored various careers from the assembly line at Lockheed to owning a mechanic shop with his brother in law, Kenneth Barrett. He then served 28 years as a Cobb County Fire Fighter where he exercised his greatest strength; helping people. For more than 40 years, in addition to and after retirement from the Fire Fighter career, he owned an underground lawn sprinkler business which he continued to run until his passing.

Neal loved people and enjoyed the company of friends from all walks of life. He never met a stranger and could talk at length with anyone. During his service as a fire fighter, he was able to meet many life-long friends within the fire department and community. He loved to laugh and to make other people laugh. He was deeply loved by his family and many friends.

He is preceded in death by many family members and friends including his parents, Morgan and Nellie Mae Eller, his brother Earl Eller, his brother Harold Eller, his beloved cousin Mitchell Eller, his brother in law Kenneth Barrett, and his soul mate Janie Reeves Eller.

He is survived by his daughter, Jo Eller, her life partner Rob Hurst, his grandson Drew Baucom, and four grandchildren Joshua, Aaron, Adam, and Hope belonging to his step-son Tim McWhirter and his wife Robin. Also, sister Mary Barrett, brother Hugh Eller, sister in law Diane Eller, nieces and nephews including Renee Fielden, Tim Fielden, Ken Barrett, Lori Barrett, Teresa Eller Morris, Jason Morris, Gene Eller, Kathy Eller, Jason Barrett, Ainsleigh Barrett, Mandi Barrett Shealey, Justin Shealey, Clint Eller, Michelle Mullinix, and many others.

I only met Neal a couple of times. He seemed to be a great person, and was always nice to everyone in the neighborhood, letting the kids go fishing in his pond. He will be missed in the neighborhood by many.

Neil was one of the strongest men Ive known. An easy friend to have with solid morals and ideals. I truly admire and respect the man. He will be missed, his kind is in great demand these days. I am sure he will continue his great work for eternity.
I remember when I was working on his house, A jeep yielding an unholy crew of the dreaded "millennial" came barreling down the driveway. As they came to a screeching dust blown halt at my ladders end, I could barely make out their complaint... It seems they were being over ridden by Neil's deer deterrent for his vegetable garden.... "We can hear it 24 hrs. a day" they whined. "We want to speak to the owner of this property" They demanded. I just pointed to the front door and said, there ya go, good luck. Now if you knew Neil, Just go ahead and imagine the look on his face when they're complaint was voiced...Priceless!! Needless to say, good ol' rock n roll continued to grace the land all day and all night, gentle and soothing from an old 80"s boom box reminding the deer and millennials alike, just to whom this garden belonged.
Love and Light my friend.

I met you 8 years ago when I met jo
At first as expected you weren't so happy to have a northerner yankee around your precious daughter over time you came to except me and we had a good relationship Not a day went by that you didn't factor into our conversation s your daily drive bys and calls to jo have become part of our lives
The kindness the generosity the playful jokes and the simple fact you were always there has left a hole that just simply can't be filled
Never have I ever met someone who made so many people so happy to see him
The last 3 weeks caring for you is a gift I never expected to have
I got to see a side of you that I never expected you let me into your heart and we finally became close friends
You called me cell mate and I'm proud to have been
Sleep well sir and give a warm hug to everyone that is rejoicing up in heaven that you are there
I love you cell mate
