Lewis Mokrasch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2017.

Dr. Lewis Cark Mokrasch, 87, passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 4, 2017.
He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to parents, Ludvig Edward and Anna Dvorak Mokrasch, both of whom had come to America as young people from the areas of Bohemia and Moravia, later to become the country of Czechoslovakia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Helen Josephine, Edward Lewis, Frederic Arthur Mokrasch, and Dorothy Kramlinger. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane Church Mokrasch, one nephew, Arthur Dennis Walsh of St. Paul, Minnesota, and one niece, Laurice M. Walsh, of California.
He graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 1952, magna cum laude. In 1955, he received a Ph. D from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, in Biochemistry.
He held teaching and research positions at the University of Kansas, Harvard, MIT, and Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he met his future wife, Jane Carolyn Church, who was then also a faculty member at LSU Medical Center. Lew was chosen as Outstanding Professor by his class of medical students at LSU.
Lew was an avid gardener, as long as his health permitted. He was known for his sense of humor, dry wit, and clever use of words. During his years of declining health, he was always a fighter, who never gave up trying to maintain his strength.
Lew was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. When he was unable to attend his church, he was so appreciative of Sandra Camastra, who came to Salemtowne to serve him Holy Communion.
Jane wants to express her thanks to the residents and staff at Salemtowne, who have been so supportive to both Jane and Lew during his declining health. She also wants to thank Drs. William Rice, Frederic Kahl, and John Gilliam, who were friends as well as doctors.
There will be a graveside service on Saturday, December 14th at 11am at Forsyth Memorial Park, officiated by Father Brian Cook. There will be a memorial mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church at a later date. Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave, Winston Salem, NC 27104, or First Presbyterian Church, 300 N Cherry St, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
