James Sweeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 13, 2017.

James Edward "Jim" Sweeney, 84, entered fully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, wife, Jane Gossweiler Sweeney of Georgetown, Texas; his cherished daughter, Brenda Sweeney Thompson and her husband Jeff Thompson of Kemah, Texas; his sister, Anne Sweeney Walker of Palm Bay, Florida; stepchildren, Ted, Michael, and Tyler Jagen and Jennifer Jagen McGraw and their spouses; grandchildren, Lauren and Connor Thompson, Megan and Aidan McGraw, and Gabrielle, Adam, Matthew, Ellie, Calvin, Anlie and Mabel Jagen. Jim is preceded in death by his parents William Joseph Sweeney and Margaret Bradley Sweeney, and siblings William "Bill" Sweeney, Jr. and Mary Sweeney Farrell.

Jim was born on August 11, 1933 in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. He served his country in the United States Army before attending college. Jim attended several universities on his way to earning Master of Finance and Master of Business Administration degrees, but none so beloved as Penn State. He was a true blue fan of the Nittany Lions and continued to meet college buddies regularly for football games and tailgating. In college, Jim was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and competed in wrestling, boxing and baseball.

Jim worked for chemical company Rohm and Haas for 40 years, originally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in many roles within the business department, retiring as Tax Manager of their Deer Park, Texas branch.

Jim loved the church and served in many leadership roles throughout his life. He loved to sing and met his wife Jane while singing in the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church choir in Friendswood, Texas. Jim continued his passion for sport by playing racquetball into his 70s. Bocce was also a favorite in later years. Jim enjoyed travelling, with Spain and Ireland (he was very proud of his Irish heritage) as his favorite destinations. A very generous man, Jim donated both time and money throughout his life to various non-profit organizations. His latest service was as a member of Kiwanis in Sun City, Georgetown, Texas.

A service at Hutto Lutheran Church in Hutto, Texas will be schedule for mid-January with another service at Christ Lutheran Church in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to follow in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.

The family would like to thank the volunteers of the Special Friends Ministry at The Worship Place in Georgetown, Texas for their wonderful care of Jim late in life as well as the amazing staff of St. David's Georgetown Hospital for their exceptional medical and comforting care at the end.

Jim will be remembered for his warmth, kindness and especially his witty sense of humor. He is tremendously loved and will be sorely missed.

Dear Jane,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing. I will always remember the fun times we had at all the social gatherings in NJ, especially the 4th of July cookouts. Jim always had a way of making everyone laugh and enjoy life. My prayers are with you and your family.
