Carl Willis Smelley, 86, of South Hill, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on December 17, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Pulley Smelley and Mattie Watson Smelley; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara Gaines Smelley. He is survived by his two children, Craig Smelley (Terry) and Deborah Wickham.
Upon graduation from Smithdeal Massey School of Business in Richmond, VA, Carl worked at DuPont for a short while, before working at R. E. Michel Company, from which he retired after a 47-year career. For many years, he taught HVAC-related courses at the Richmond Technical School, and was awarded the distinction of being the "Instructor of the Year."
Carl was a faithful member of Skipwith Baptist Church for 60 years, and served in various capacities, to include Sunday School teacher for over 50 years, and Chairman of the Deacon Committee. He also served as a Bible teacher in the Henrico County Jail Ministry for many years. Carl served as Secretary, Trustee and Master of Joppa #40 A. F. & A. M. He was also a member of the ACCA Provost Guard, ACCA Shriners and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
Carl loved sports, and could be found on the golf course most Saturdays. Carl will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his love of family, his generous and caring spirit, and his kind heart. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, at Woody's, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, VA. Although we did not agree on a number of things, Carl never led me down the wrong path. On the bright side even if I felt he was to be incorrect Bobbie was always there to keep us both straight. What a privilege it was to be a part of his family. I look forward to seeing him again in our new home !!!
