Paul Van Thorniley, 80, of Richmond VA, passed away on December 16, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Ralph and Irene Chaby Thorniley, his sister Joanne Kane and his nephew, Robert Kikkert. He is survived by his wife, Susan Clohan Thorniley; sons, Bruce A. and Brian K. Thorniley; step-children, Jennifer L. Sutherland (Mark), H. Kenneth Cushwa III (Sheila) and William B. Cushwa (Rachel); grandchildren, Ashley and Bethany Sutherland, Kimberly, Kathryn, Chloe and Liam Cushwa.
Paul was a proud graduate of Purdue University where he received both his BS and MS in Civil Engineering. While serving in the US Army, he graduated from the Army Language School and received the Army Commendation Medal and the ASUA Achievement Award.
He had a successful career in civil engineering and construction project management. His projects were in multiple states and included office buildings, schools, hotels, apartments, base housing and other government structures. After "retirement" he worked as a consultant/manager for projects in Northern VA and Maryland.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, at Bon Air Baptist Church, 2531 Buford Road, Richmond, VA 23235. A reception at the church will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Purdue Musical Organization, 359 Northwestern Ave, West Lafayette, IN 47906-2967 or the Bon Air Baptist Church music program.
