COLUMBIA - William Joseph Keenan, III passed away on December 19, 2017 at the age of 95. Bill Keenan was born in Columbia, South Carolina to the late William Joseph Keenan, Jr. and Elmira deGraffenried Keenan.



He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and Princeton University. After serving his country in the Field Artillery in World War II, he worked as a partner of Harmon-Keenan architects, designing many well know buildings including the Capstone Building and the Honeycombs at USC, Satchel Ford Elementary, and numerous other buildings in South Carolina. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, member of Forest Lake Club, the Columbia Cotillion Club, and Pine Tree Hunt Club.



Bill was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Jones Keenan and his son, Christopher deGraffenried Keenan, Sr., as well as brothers, Richard deGraffenried Keenan and Andrew Charles Moore Keenan. Bill is survived by his children, Margaret Jones Keenan of Shelby N.C., Nicholas deGraffenried Keenan of Shelby N.C.; daughter-in-law, Adair Floyd Keenan of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Ronald Keenan Hamrick, Justin Thomas Hamrick (BriAnne), Margaret Elizabeth Hamrick, Jason Lee Hamrick (Maria); Christopher deGraffenried Keenan, Jr., Miriam Adair Sadler Keenan, William Joseph Marshall Keenan; great-grandchildren, Charlesse Maria Hamrick and Jay William Hamrick as well as numerous nieces and nephews.



Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, and a graveside service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. A reception will follow in the William J. Keenan Event Center at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, One Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Still Hopes, or the charity of your choice.

I worked at Still Hopes front desk and enjoyed hearing the many stories that Mr. Keenan shared. He was a man that I admired and respected. I was there when he had to put his little dog to sleep, we both cried . He is a man that will be missed.
