COLUMBIA - Lt. Col. Malcolm M. Watkins, USAF (Ret.), 87, died Friday, December 22, 2017. The family will celebrate Lt. Col. Watkins’ life at a later date.
Born in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of the late Samuel Thomas and Lucia Small Watkins. He graduated from The Citadel in 1951 and was a Life Member of the Association of Citadel Men.
Lt. Col. Watkins served 20 years as a career officer with overseas tours in Germany, France, Iceland and New Zealand.
He was a Life Member of The Retired Officers Association. After his retirement from military service in 1971, Lt. Col. Watkins was employed by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC). He retired from SCDHEC in 1992 after 20 years of service.
Lt. Col. Watkins was a member and former Deacon of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, William G. (Bill) and Joy Jones Watkins, of Blythewood; daughter and son-in-law, Sally W. and Joseph E. (Buddy) Wallace, Jr., of Roscoe, IL; sisters, Alice Northey, of Casper, WY, and Ruth Rourk, of Frisco, TX; and grandchildren, Jay Wallace and his wife, Anna and Stuart Wallace and Kayleigh Hovland of Charleston, Hunter Watkins of Lexington, and Erin Watkins of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Sarah Louise Wallace and Sullivan Ryan Wallace. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sarah Woodall Watkins; his second wife, Jean Nicholson Watkins; and a son, Thomas Woodall Watkins.
