Gary Meadows Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 21, 2017.

Born in New Orleans, September 17, 1956 as the middle child of James D. Meadows and Lena N. Meadows. Survived by his wife Heather Foshee Meadows and children James Gary Meadows, Elizabeth Jane Meadows and James Lee Friedman, his brothers, James Meadows and his wife Cheryl of Destrehan, and Jason Meadows of Metairie and numerous other friends and family. Gary was a devoted and loving father and husband. He was a man of honor and a true gentleman in every way, always ready to help anyone he knew. Gary had more friends than just acquaintances, especially Selim Berkol and Larry Vasek who were like brothers to him. Gary graduated from East Jefferson High School in 1974 and then worked his way through college as a painter in his family's construction business obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Louisiana State University. In 1979 Gary went to work with Carl E. Woodward Design+Build. and then moved to Broadmoor Construction. There he served as a project architect for HRI's (now HRI Properties) first hotel development, the adaptive reuse of former historic DH Holmes Department Store into the 250 room Chateau Sonesta at Canal and Bourbon (today a Hyatt Centrix). In 1995, he went to HRI to head its architectural division where as President of HCI Architecture he grew the division into one of the largest and most prolific architecture firms in the City of New Orleans and served as Architect of Record for over 52 major projects across in the City and State. His passion was overcoming the design challenges of converting massive historic structures into apartments, market rate and affordable and hotel rooms. The design awards are too many to recite. Notable historic restoration projects in New Orleans include: American Can Apartments, Bakery Apartments, Cotton Mill Apartments, River Garden Historic Apartments, Flint Goodrich, River Garden Elderly, ByWater Art Lofts I & II, Redemptorist Apartments, Blue Plate Lofts, Rosa Keller Apartments, Hibernia Tower, and Marais Apartments; Gary who was the son of a home builder knew new construction well. In 2003, adhering to the principles of New Urbanism Gary lead the team in the design of a new mixed income neighborhood in the Lower Garden District: the conversion of the former St Thomas Public Housing Project into a mixed income neighborhood, known today as Rivergardens. Building on this experience, he later led the design of new neighborhood in the center city, formerly the Iberville Public Housing Project and today the mixed income Bienville Basin community. Gary in defining his life's work often repeated the words of Michelangelo saying his job "is to find the angel in the block of marble." Gary is now teaching the angels. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017, with a Funeral Mass and celebration of his life to follow at 1:00 p.m., at St. Pius X Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd., in New Orleans. Interment will immediately follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. For those so desiring, memorials may be made in honor of Gary to St. Pius X Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70124 or Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans 923 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, Louisiana 70130.

What a strong influence Mr. Meadows was. I worked with him at HRI many years ago. I was struck by his knowledge and his work ethic. I'm so sorry to read of his passing. Please accept my condolences and know that Gary's work continues to tell the story of how effective he was at what he did.

I was Gary's college roommate for 3 years while we attended Architecture School at LSU in Baton Rouge. We also attended East Jefferson High School together where we took drafting classes and that's why we decided to study architecture. In the 45 years I have known Gary, I've known him to have a passion for life, family and architecture. Gary was a brilliant architect and good friend. Gary left his mark on and will be missed by all of us in the architecture community. My heart goes out to Gary's entire family, I am praying for all of you. God bless all of you and I hope that you have some comfort knowing that Gary is now an angel in heaven and is resting comfortable in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Heather, I did not know Gary was an Architect, and such an accomplished one at that. His legacy will live on through his numerous works around the City that is so much better off because of him. And of course, more importantly, it will live on through the wonderful family that you created together. God bless!

I am so sorry to learn of Gary's passing. He was a good friend - we first met at EJHS in our mechanical drawing class and then on to the LSU School of Architecture. He was willing to help with whatever you needed. I will always remember Gary as a good friend. We are praying for him and his family in their time of grief.
