Bess Queen Kirkland, 93, passed away December 27, 2017 in UVA Culpeper. Mrs. Kirkland was born in North Carolina March 11, 1924 to Thomas Clingman Queen and Miriam Miller Queen; was a member of the Class of 1941 at Mitchell's High School; earned her B.A. degree in education in 1945 from Madison College and taught in the Culpeper County School System from 1961 until 1989 ( mostly at Farmington Elementary School).
Surviving Mrs. Kirkland are her daughters, M. Susan Kirkland and Miriam K. Kirkland and her brother, James A. Queen, all of Culpeper, VA. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Charles Kirkland and her siblings, Dan Queen, Vernon Queen, Felix Queen, Haynes Queen and Inez Queen Jenkins.
The family will receive friends from 12:00p.m. until 1:00p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Clore-English Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Clore-English Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Carlton officiating, Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 1:00p.m.. Burial will be in the Culpeper National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Baptist Church or the Culpeper Humane Society.

So sorry to hear of your loss. My mom, Dorothy Hawkins Carder, always looked forward to visiting your Mom on our furloughs. Sometimes the rest of us came over to your house with her. Bess was at my mom's funeral. I had planned to drive down from Woodbridge yesterday to her funeral but had car trouble and didn't make it. Thinking of you and wishing you all the best.
