Uncle and godfather Nelson was a real father figure to me. My godmother/Aunt Gray and Nelson took their role seriously and included me in everything when my dad left to start his new family. Nelson had an infectious laugh and broad smile for me no matter what. He taught me by example: patience, generosity of spirit, self discipline, resiliency, focus, how to make others and myself feel valued, and how to have a world-class fun! With them, especially on my long summer stays in Virginia, I learned the pastimes wholesome families engage in.. how to fish, all sorts of card and board games and interesting puzzles, we did "the jumble", baked and canned, made homemade ice cream, went on picnics. Almost nightly sat on the screened in porch in South Hill "visiting" with neighbors and each other, hearing the older folks reminisce, when we were down there, We all enjoyed Summers at Buggs Island Lake and Virginia Beach. A veteran of WWII and Korea, smart as a fox, kindhearted, and generous, he taught me the best a person could be. They were part of my confirmation and spiritual development. The world lost an amazing soul.. I am so thankful he was part of my growing-up. I am so grateful I was able to tell him how I appreciated him on this level years ago. Good man, all around. Thank you to the Bowens for sharing your Daddy with me!!

It was a great personal pleasure to meet, come to know, and serve Mr. Bowen and his family during his residency at Commonwealth Senior Living. Ed was a true rock of a man, from his service to the country at times of threat, throughout his career service, and his over half-century partnership with his beloved wife in raising an outstanding family.
Although Ed was advanced in age when I knew him, his presence among other men was characterized by great dignity and a presence that commanded respect. I'll greatly miss Ed, but promise to take his attitude of service to country and others into my own life.
God bless and keep you all, Bowen family.
