Shirley Thomas Kendrick, 81, of Troy, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2018, at home with her family by her side. Born on July 27, 1936, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Mabel Goolsby Bragg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Kendrick; son, James Thomas, II; and grandson, James "Gordy" Thomas, III.
Shirley will be sorely missed by her children, Dwayne Kendrick and his girlfriend, Nora, Karen Owen and her husband, Ronnie, Pam Gibson and her husband, James, Daryl Thomas, Brian Thomas, Richard "Ricky" Kendrick, Sr., Robert "Joey" Kendrick Jr., and Charles Kendrick. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Heaven Kendrick, Abigail Kendrick, Emma Kendrick, Jennifer Olson, Joshua Thomas, Jason Gibson, Richard Kendrick, Jr., Jeff Owen, Justin Owen, and Sandra Kendrick. Shirley also leaves behind eight great grandchildren.
Shirley had worked for ACME Records in food service where she met her husband Robert. Later Shirley worked for Albemarle County schools transportation as an aide on the buses where she enjoyed working with the children.
In Shirley’s memory and in honor of her love for the beauty of the Earth a memorial service will be held when flowers begin to bloom and the smell of honeysuckle fills the air.
The family expresses their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of the Piedmont, Martha Jefferson Hospital, and Dr. David Nielsen.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorial contributions be made in Shirley’s name to Hospice of the Piedmont, hopva.org.
