WANDA MARY WEIR GASSNER returned home to her Heavenly Father, passing on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at the Silverado Care Center in Holladay, surrounded by her loving family and friends. A nine-month battle with Chondrosarcoma took this lovely lady from us at the age of 63.
Wanda was born on November 2, 1954, in Belize to Raymond Weir and Helen Pate, where she grew up. She immigrated to New York City, living in Brooklyn/Borough Park and graduating from Neu Utrecht High in 1971. Invited by family members to come and visit them in Southern California, she liked it so much, she stayed, living in South Gate. She was employed with the Rapid Transit District in Los Angeles as an instructor, dispatcher, and supervisor. There she met her husband Wilfried, also a supervisor. They were married at the Fern Grotto on Kauai in Hawaii in 1989 and one years later they were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. They lived in Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach where they attended the Long Beach Ninth Ward, each having callings to serve faithfully.
One of the highlights of their career was working together at the 1986 Olympic Summer Games at the historic Los Angeles Coliseum. Another memorable work event was at the annual Pasadena Rose Parade and football game on January First. Wilfried supervised transit on Colorado Blvd. and Wanda directed the floats into Victory Park at the terminal location. Then that afternoon, they both worked for the crowds after the bowl game to transit buses.
In 1995 the family moved to Sandy, Utah with their two young sons. Wanda became a UTA supervisor and Wilfried drove UTA buses. Wanda's career was short-lived due to her triple by-pass operation at the U. She also had a Bells Palsy ailment which the Moran Eye Institute treated. No Longer able to work, Wanda concentrated on her gifted craft and hobby abilities, knitting and crocheting, and volunteering for various church and community organizations. She had the gift of being a people-positive leader, always bringing out the best in the people she came in contact with! She was a wonderful and talented organizer, a hard worker, and a SAINT of a mother and wife. We will miss her dearly, treasuring our precious memories of her in our lives. Wanda's two sons, James and Martin, were the two jewels in her crown. Wanda's family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the personnel at the U, and at the Huntsman Cancer Center, and at the Silverado Care Center for all the care given to our WONDERFUL WANDA. Thank you all!
The funeral service for Wanda will be held on Tuesday, January 9, at the LDS Holladay 2nd Ward Chapel, located at 2065 East 4675 South in Holladay; viewing in the Relief Society Room at 10:00 am, the service in the chapel at 11:00 am. Gravesite interment at 12:30 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Drive in Millcreek, Salt Lake.

Wanda will be missed. We were friends some time ago. I've often reflected on some of the things she said. I appreciate the wisdom she shared and her sense of humor. May Peace and Comfort be with those who love her at this time and may you have joy in the future as you reflect on the memories.

My most heartfelt condolences to Bill and family. I miss our conversations about our years in Los Angeles.Wanda had a wonderful wit. I will never forget the time she teasingly referred to me as a closet Latin. This poor little Caucasian kid from East L.A.thought that was charming.

To the Gassner Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Wanda's passing. I had the pleasure of becoming her friend when she served the relief society role at Evergreen Canyons back in 2004 and likely past 2008 when I left there. Wanda was a bright light in the world. She made people's lives a better place, including mine. May the memories you've built over the years comfort each of you as you grieve her loss. I know she surrounds each of you.
