Margaret Dunigan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2018.

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved mother, Margaret "Peggy" O'Boyle Dunigan, 75, who passed away peacefully at her home in Montclair, NJ.

Born in Newark, Peggy was a proud lifelong resident of Bloomfield, before moving to Montclair in 2015. She worked for NJ Bell Telephone in Newark, where she met friends she is still in contact with today. Peggy worked at the Brookside Garden Center in Bloomfield for many years, where she greeted every customer with her beautiful smile. Peggy was a graduate of Sacred Heart School and Mount Saint Dominic Academy, where she was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2001. She was an active member of the Bloomfield and Essex County Democratic Committee, the Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield and She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and was a member of the Giblin, Cryan and McGovern Associations as well as the Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and both the Nutley and Belleville Irish American Associations.

In 2017, Peggy was inducted to the Essex County Democratic Committee Hall of Fame. She was the Deputy Grand Marshall of the 2001 Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade, Guest of Honor of the 2005 Giblin Association, Deputy Grand Marshall of the 2008 Nutley Irish American Association, Irish Woman of the Year 2013 Brian Boru Association, 2015 Essex County Woman of the Year, Bloomfield Council Woman 2002-2007 and 2011-2013, 2013 Marion Crecco Heart Association Woman of the Year, was a member of the Board of the Job Haines Home and the Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center as well as the United Way of Bloomfield.

Peggy was the wife of the late Paul Dunigan Jr., the mother of Peggy Scherer and her husband Richard, Susan Dunigan, Nora Smeltzer and the late Steven, Treacy Dunigan, Elizabeth Dunigan and the late Kevin Patrick Dunigan,, grandmother of Hannah Margaret and Kayley Anne Scherer, and is also survived by her brothers Michael O'Boyle and his wife Mary, Martin O'Boyle and his wife Judy, Kathy O'Boyle and Bob O'Donnell, Maureen McAlea and her husband Tom, MaryKay O'Rourke and her husband Vincent, Rosemary LePore and her husband Patrick and Grace Swab and many nieces and nephews.

Our Mother instilled into us the importance of family, faith, friendship, community service and love of our Irish heritage. She had a heart of gold, an infectious laugh, a quick wit and a smile that could cure any bad mood. If it was a quick chat in the grocery store or at a community event, Peggy would always make it a point to say hello and see how you were doing, not because she had to, she generally was interested in you.

Our Mother accomplished so much during her life, but, has often told us that her most cherished accomplishment was raising her six children. We will live each day as she did by giving back and helping others, in hopes that we continue her legacy. She was not only the light of our lives, but a shining example of what a beautiful soul on earth looks like. She was a combination of beauty, class and strength and will be missed beyond words.
