Ernest Stanley Abbott, beloved husband of Olga Bak Abbott, passed away on Saturday January 6, 2018 at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. He was 90 years old.
Born on 21 April 1927, in Camden, New Jersey, he was the third son of William E. Abbott and Clara Stannard Abbott. After graduating from Collingswood High School in New Jersey, he served in the US Army as part of the occupation forces in Germany at the end of WWII. With the help of the G.I. Bill, he graduated from Trenton State Teacher's College, where he met his wife, Olga. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi, the national honor society in education. Ernie then pursued an advanced engineering degree at Michigan State College. Excellent at mathematics, he entered the burgeoning aerospace industry. His career began at Allegany Ballistic Laboratory in West Virginia and continued at Reaction Motors in New Jersey. There his team designed the XLR rocket engine for the North American X-15, the first successful hypersonic rocket powered aircraft. His specialty, liquid and solid fueled small rocket propulsion engines, led him to work on the development of the altitude thrusters for the Apollo Lunar Module at United Technology Hamilton Standard in Connecticut.
Ernie loved spending time with his family and neighbors, especially his many hours on the shores of Shongum Lake in Randolph, New Jersey and later on the tennis courts in Simsbury, Connecticut. Upon his retirement, Ernie and Olga moved to Georgetown, SC. They were immediately drawn to Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church and became active members for 22 years. Ernie volunteered for many years at Brookgreen Gardens offices and the Kaminski House Museum. He organized Senior Scholar lectures as part of the Friends of the Georgetown County Library. His enthusiasm and skill at bridge was well known among his friends. World travel was the other passion he shared with Olga. Recently, he and Olga relocated to Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, VA to be closer to family.
The twinkle in his eye, sense of humor, and easy-going demeanor will be missed by all who knew him, especially Olga, their four daughters and their families: Diane Abbott and Joe Mullinix of San Francisco, CA; Susan and Don Peters of Tucson, AZ; Nancy and Wil Cadet of Hercules, CA; Jeanne and NiiBen Ayivorh of Burke, VA; and four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ernie is survived by two loving sisters: Marian A. Blumenstetter of Tucson, AZ and Emily A. Perkins of Indianapolis, IN.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at Greenspring Village Chapel, 7420 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA on Saturday 13 January at 1:30 pm. A reception will follow. A memorial service and final interment at Prince George Winyah Church is planned for April 2018.

We only recently became acquainted with Ernie and Olga. They opened up their home and embraced us as newcomers to the Georgetown area. We will "hold" Ernie fondly in our hearts. We pray God will continue to watch over Olga.

Olga, we prayed for Ernie everyday, since I first met him doing pastoral care at Prince George Church some time ago. Loved to chat with him. We will continue to pray for you, and see you at his service in Georgetown. Todd Crane
