Ellen Spearel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2018.

Spearel, Ellen Logan,

88 of Clearwater passed away January 9, 2018 in her home under Hospice care. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, she was raised on her grandparents’ farm until she joined her parents for her father’s next military assignment at Camp Blanding, Florida where he ran Civilian Conservation Corps Camps until the start of WW II. She then went to art school in Montreat, North Carolina during the duration of the war. Afterwards, she rejoined her father and mother and moved to Austria where she went to boarding school while her father, an Army Finance Officer, tended to his duties as the Senior Finance Officer supervising finance operations for the European Theater as well as attending his high level meetings with Senior Bank Representatives of the various banks and governments affected by the war, to restart their banking system under the Marshall Plan. Upon her return from Europe, she moved with her parents to her father’s next assignment at Ft. Benning, Georgia where she met her husband of 68 years whom she met on a blind date and was a pilot assigned to support the Basic Airborne School with Air support. She is the 6th generation descendant of Major Francis O. Logan who was a Major in the Continental Army of South Carolina serving in the Revolutionary War. She is predeceased by her parents, Lt.Col. US Army (Retired) Cahrles O. Logan and Dulce Duckworth Logan as well as her son, Capt.(P) Donald W. Spearel Jr. and daughter, Leslie Ann Spearel. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Col. USAF (Ret.) Donald W. Spearel; sons, Warren E. Spearel and David B Spearel Sgt. USA (Ret). Also Grandchildren, Brent W. Spearel, Christopher B. Spearel, and Brittany N. Spearel; and Great Granddaughter, Jaya Spearel. She was an avid bowler and played on Leagues at bases her husband was assigned to include MacDill AFB, Florida Bolling Field, Maryland Andrews AFB, Maryland, and Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany. In addition to that, she belonged to the Officer’s Wives Clubs at each Base her husband was assigned to until his retirement. After settling into their retirement, they both travelled all across America visiting old military friends and traveling to various places abroad. In between her travels, she volunteered at Mease Countryside Hospital in the Gift Shop and at various professional Golf tournaments for over ten years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and loved by many military friends who considered her as a second mother to them. She had a warm heart, a friendly smile and her sense of humor that will be remembered by all who knew her. Viewing will be from 11am to 1pm at Sylvan Abby Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Rd, Clearwater 33759, immediately followed by service and interment at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. Friends and family invited to attend. In lieu of Flowers, the family has requested Memorial Donations be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter 1-800-272-3900.

It's been quite difficult for me to put together the words that can fully express how much the Spearel family, Ellen in particular, meant to many of the Wiesbaden Flyer football players of the late 1960s. Ellen was so very special in not only supporting us on the field, but ensuring that we had a place to celebrate important holiday dates. Thank you, Ellen, for providing us a home away from home. You'll always be remembered and loved!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
