Ira Hubbell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2018.

Ira Hubbell 1927-2018 Ira George Hubbell Jr, 90, former local physician, died in peace at his home in Columbia on January 8, 2018 following a prolonged illness.

He was the only son of Ira George and Katherine Beck Hubbell, born in New Haven CT on December 8, 1927. Dr. Hubbell was a 4th generation physician who grew up in New Haven, CT, played college football and hockey, and entered the military at the end of WWII, serving as a captain in the Navy and Naval Air Force. Dr. Hubbell was an inveterate Missouri Tiger, and was conferred with a BSE '56, MS '58, MD '63, and culminated with anesthesiology training in 1968. He practiced Anesthesiology at Boone and Regional hospitals and remained on the teaching staff at UMC until his retirement. He measured success on what he could do for others, not accumulations or accolades. He was a Shriner and valued what he could do for younger generations, supporting education and advancement for his Alma Mater in engineering and medicine, the 4-H, Coyote Hills, the YouZeum, and the Shriners.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents, an older sister Joyce Helen Hotchkiss (2001) stepdaughter Tamara Sickal Atkins (2006) second wife Gail Finch Hubbell (2012) and first wife Mary Avery Hubbell (2015). He is survived by two sisters Nancy Matthies and Fanny Lou Forsberg of Orange, CT; one son Dr. George Peyton Hubbell (Victoria) of Lake Ozark MO; two granddaughters Alexandra Peyton Hubbell (Bar Zalel) of Paris, France, and Katherine Ferris Mauss (Matthew Gray) of Severn MD with a great granddaughter Estella Gray Mauss; a stepson Greg Sickal (Sue) of Campbell CA; two stepgrandsons Thomas Ira Atkins of Boston, MA; and Andrew Finch Atkins of Dallas, TX.

Dr. Hubbell was a long-time member of Missouri United Methodist Church (204 So. 9th Street, Columbia) where a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 1:30. Visitation at the church will be from 11:30AM – 1:30PM. Memorial donations may be sent to Coyote Hills, c/o Hubbell Home, P.O. Box 1, Harrisburg, MO, 65256.
