Friend
David Elman
I called Toby Uncle Tolbert. He was a great friend to Dad. All my life Uncle Tolbert, Aunt Jean, Jimmy and David were extended family.
Uncle Tolbert took his role as Dad's best friend seriously. When I was way past being a pain, for some reason I was in front of our house. I don't remember what trouble I was in but Uncle Tolbert came over there. Mom and Dad were out of town.
He was angry with me and wanted to punish me. Maybe I was 15. He said something, and I responded, You're not my father. He was taken aback. He thought about it for a moment, said, You're right, I'm not, got into his car and left.
Uncle Tolbert thought of himself as a father to me, because of his love for my father. I think he accepted his role as friend effortlessly, seriously, willing to do whatever he could. He was a good friend to me as I grew up, and always was open to me.
May you rest in peace Uncle Tolbert.

Out of the blue I get a call at school, Washington College, one evening when I'd only been there for a month.
It was Uncle Toblbert, saying he and Aunt Jean wanted to take me out to dinner! How sweet, they set sail from Selby Bay to come visit me across the Chesapeake.
So typical of their thoughfulness and friendship.
So many good memories.

Berneard Elman, II
A great captain of the "We 4" when he did not have to be 1st Mate. Always enjoyed the sailing weekends. Always had a suggestion to help. One of a kind; will be missed....
