Jeraine Wynton Reat, age 88, passed away at her home in Houston on Thursday January 11, 2018 after a long illness. She was born in Dallas on September 1, 1929 to Dale and John Ferguson.
Jeraine was a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, cousin, teacher, artist, and friend.
As a child, Jeraine studied at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts under full scholarship. After graduating from Reagan High School she studied commercial and fashion illustration at Feather and Feather School of Design. Early on she worked many years as a freelance commercial fashion illustrator where her work was featured in many newspapers and catalogues. Later in life she bought her first tube of oil paint and found her calling as a portrait artist and teacher. Her paintings are in homes across the country. She was commissioned by the Houston Bar Association to paint the portraits of various Harris County judges. She also painted many portraits for the University of Texas School of Nursing. She won many awards at juried art shows and was a long-time member of the Houston Art Society, Houston Art League, and American Pen Women. Jeraine taught oil painting to hundreds of long-time students, many who attended classes at Jeraine's Paintin' Place and Gallery, that she operated at least 25 years. She was loved by her students for her wisdom, talent, sharp wit, kind critiques, and counseling. She "helped finish" many of her student's masterpieces.
She is survived by daughters Vickie Reat and wife Natasha Schave and their children Wylie and Esme; Jennifer Kappus and her husband Ron and their children Orry Kappus and Sabrina Bach; grandson Nathan Kinman; sister-in-law Helene Reat; and first cousin Sandra Brezina. She was great-grandmother to Samuel and Ethan Bach. She was survived by nieces, nephews, and special cousins. Jeraine is predeceased by her beloved husband Grover, her daughter Angela Kinman, and her parents.
Jeraine loved her family, her cats, and glass candy dishes. She also had a fondness for gardening, Shark Tank, Galveston, port, parties, hamburger helper, shake n' bake, cigarettes, and polyester.

What am I to say about the privilege I had to take care of such a wonderful, warm, wickedly witty, loving, talented, classy lady as Jeraine...except she was all that and more. A lady to the end. I learned from HER ALL my life growing up next door to the Reat clan. My Mom Oma Lyn and her made a dynamic duo. The stories she shared with me over the last 4 years ,about their "new neighbor" adventures moving into the "hood" back in the day (1964)were so dear. I have lots and lots of Jeraine humor stories I could share but I'm sure there is a limit on here as to how much room. THANK YOU JERAINE!!! I and MANY people will never see life or life's colors in the same way. And I will ALWAYS...ALWAYS from now on when I see the color red question and argue with myself if IT IS TRUE RED OR NOT LOL!!

We loved being in Jeraine's presence, especially when she was keeping Neysia in line, or at least trying. They were so cute together. Neysia loved Jeraine and her art work, always bragging on her friend's talent. Jeraine's paintings now grace our homes. What a treasured gift they shared, that being a true lifetime of true friendship. What began in Middle School is surely continuing on behind Heaven's Gates! Loved listening to them in the car together while driving to Brookwood for an outing. Oh the stories that we heard coming from the backseat, mostly about high school antics and memories. She was a treasure to the Hollingsworth family and will be so missed. The Hollingsworth's
