Thyra Weekes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2018.

It is with great sadness that the family of Thyra Evelyn (Wells) Weekes announces her passing at the Heatherwood Retirement Community in Burke, Virginia on Saturday, January 13, 2018. She had recently celebrated her 89th birthday.

Thyra will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her sons Greg (Sanford, Florida), Randy (Alexandria, Virginia), Mike (Bloomington, Illinois) and Dean (Greenville, South Carolina). She will also be fondly remembered by her 10 grandchildren (Krista, Caitlin, Connor, Amanda, Becca, Daniel, Chris, Nikole, Ashley and Aaron) and three great-grandchildren (Oliver, Elliot and Addie), as well as by her close friends at Springfield United Methodist Church. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Cooper of Roanoke, Virginia, and was predeceased by her loving husband of 27 years, Robert E. "Bob" Weekes, and two brothers, Jack and Lee.

Thyra was born in Jensen Beach, Florida and grew up in Lakeland, Florida. Shortly after graduating from Lakeland High School she met her future husband while employed as a secretary at Prudential Insurance in Lakeland. Bob and Thyra lived in Lakeland, Cleveland, Ohio and Jacksonville, Florida raising a family before settling in Springfield, Virginia in 1963. After Bob's untimely passing in 1976 Thyra remained in the family home until September 2014; she was a resident of Northern Virginia for more than 54 years.

Thyra had a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and was an enthusiastic gardener; her meticulously landscaped yard was her absolute pride and joy. She particularly welcomed the arrival of spring and its promise of new life, bountiful blooms and fresh green leaves. In addition to gardening, Thyra took great pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren, especially during the holidays. She loved nothing more than being with her family and fixing a delicious dinner for her sons, their wives and her grandchildren, who all affectionately called her "Gigi." Thyra also had many dear, longtime friends at Springfield United Methodist Church, where she did volunteer work and tended the church's Love Garden.

Our mother had a strong, abiding faith and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and she is now reunited with her husband in the Kingdom of Heaven. Her kind, generous and loving spirit will be forever remembered by the many people whose lives she touched.

To a wonderful "lady" may she rest in peace. She was so proud of her sons, their wives & her grandchildren. I had the pleasure of working with Thyra and a day didn't go by that she didn't talk about her family.
