Grace Barbera,103, of Croton on Hudson, and formerly of the Bronx, NY passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018. Grace was born May 1, 1914 to Rosaria and Antonio Nasca in Grammichele, Sicily, Italy. Grace was devoted to her family. Her dedication to family began at an early age when her mother passed when she was only 9 years old. She learned to sew and cook and take care of her brother and father in the home.
Grace married Giovanni Barbera on December 26, 1931 at the age of 17. Grace left Grammichele, Sicily in March 1937, traveled up to Naples, and boarded the ocean liner "The Rex" with her two daughters Grace and Rosaria in tow to meet her husband Giovanni in New York. The journey took 7 days. Their family soon grew to include another daughter, Rose Josephine, after her arrival to the US. Grace taught herself English and became a US Citizen soon after arriving in the United States. She developed into an accomplished seamstress, perfecting her talents in knitting, crocheting, lacework and sewing.
Grace was preceded in death in 1985 by her beloved husband of 54 years Giovanni Barbera. Grace is survived by; daughter Grace Valentine, Rosaria "Sadie" Longobardi, and Rose Hubner (Gregory); granddaughters Susan Pulio (Thomas), Cynthia Pulio (Leonard), and Jeanette Doyle (Thomas), grandson John Longobardi (Shally), granddaughter Karen Cornelius, and Janet Lowe and grandson Gregg Hubner (Nancy). Grace also leaves behind 8 great grandchildren and a nephew Tonino Nasco.
Visitation will be held 4-8PM on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton on Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM on Saturday, January 20th at Holy Name of Mary Church, Croton on Hudson, NY. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
