Eddie, as she was known, attended Fairview Grade School and High School graduating in 1943. She joined the Cadet Nursing Corps when World War II broke out. After the war, she studied at the Miami Valley School of Nursing graduating in 1947. Then, she was awarded a scholarship for Advanced Study in Nursing at Western Reserve University. During her time at the university, she agreed to attend a school dance with a friend and met her future husband, Lloyd Matthews. She was hospitalized at the Stillwater Sanatorium in Dayton for a year, where Lloyd stood by her side and continued to court her. Given a clean bill of health in 1953, Edwina and Lloyd married.
