Elizabeth Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2018.

Elizabeth "Libby" McManus Dunn passed away into the hands of her Lord and Savior for eternal life on January 15, 2018. Libby to some, Tibba to others, was born January 27, 1929 in Cabarrus County, NC. Libby was always a loving and giving mother, grandmother, and friend; this same attitude continued even after she struggled with Alzheimer's. Her family and friends will forever remember Libby for her passion and delight in helping others, especially children.

Libby attended Mars Hill Junior College where she met her husband of 50 years, William Benson Dunn. They were married September 9, 1950. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 1950 with a degree in Sociology. Libby taught 4th grade and was the associate director of Lenoir Recreation Center. From 1951 -1953 she was the executive director of the Alamance County Girl Scouts. She and her husband moved to Greensboro where her three children were born; William "Bill" Benson Dunn (wife Beth Apple Dunn), Phillip Alan Dunn (wife Melissa Shelton Dunn), and Karen Elizabeth Dunn Aycock (husband Paul Aycock). In 1957, Bill and Libby moved their family to Wilkes Barre, PA and from there moved to Mooresville, NC in 1960 and then back to Greensboro, NC in 1964.
Along with raising her three children, she was also very active in the community. Libby taught school until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of Yard Birds Garden Club, continued to work with the Girl Scouts, volunteered in schools, and was a Member of Beta Sigma Phi. Libby was also very involved with her church, Guilford Park Presbyterian. She became a Stephen Minister in 2003, was a member of the Prime Time Painters, taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, and was an active member of her Circle. Libby's passion in her free time was gardening, painting, playing games, and being with friends and family. Libby is not only survived by her three children but her 6 grandchildren; Jason Dunn (Sarah) of Leland, NC, Hayley Wood (Barry) of Greensboro, Jennifer Dunn (Fiancé – Aaron Brunk) of Greensboro, Kellie Phillips (Eric) of Greensboro, Benjamin Dunn of Greensboro, and Robert Aycock of West Palm Beach. She also leaves behind 3 great grandchildren Emma, Harper and Grady all of Leland, NC. Libby was very dear to us all and will be sorely missed. We will always remember her kindness, joviality and ever-positive attitude.

The memorial service for Libby will be held at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, on Saturday, January 20 at 3:00 pm. Visitation will be at 2:00 prior to the service and interment will follow at Westminster Gardens on Whitehurst Road. Online condolences may be offered at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com.
