Salvatore Joseph Vasta, Jr. of Croton-on-Hudson, NY passed away on Veterans Day, November 11, 2017, at the age 89. He was born on August 29, 1928 to the late Salvatore and Maria (nee Sgroi), who both emigrated from Sicily, Italy. Salvatore had tremendous faith in God and a love of his country that was never ending.
In 1951, he married the love of his life Patricia (nee Quinn) and together they raised nine children. He was honored to be a Seaman in the United States Navy (USSS Fred T. Berry) and served during WWII. He was a master mason for most of his adult life and built the "foundations" for many families in Croton-on-Hudson, where he was a life-long resident. In 2008, he was presented with a high school diploma from Croton-Harmon High School as part of New York State Operation Recognition.
Salvatore was a member of International Operating Engineers-Local 137, Harmon Engine, The Knights of Columbus, NY Blood Center's 30 Gallon Club and his second home, The Holy Name of Mary Parish. For many years he coached CYO basketball and was an active leader in Boy Scout Troop 25, where he mentored countless young men through their formative years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of 66 years; brother Frank, children: Sally Antunovich, (Robert), Thomas (Leslie), Robert (Kathy), Anthony (Carol Ann), Salvatore (Linda), Frank (Renee), Joseph (Pennie), Michael (Sharon), Patricia; fifteen grandchildren: Anthony (Laura), Kenneth (Elizabeth), Jill Jimerson (Brad), Robert (Jacque), Mary-Katherine Neal (Rob), Meredith (Charles), Benjamin, Christopher, Amanda, Madison (Jack), Mason, Nicholas, Ava, Ryan, and Lianna. Also, three great grandchildren: Keegan, Makayla, Charlotte and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved sister Giuseppina (Josephine), brother Angelo and granddaughter Rachel Antunovich.
Most of all he was so incredibly proud of his family and deeply cherished the small moments of everyday life. He was at peace to walk with Jesus and be in the presence of The Lord.

Although I've never met or knew Mr. Vasta, I can tell by the wonderful stories , and as a Longtime Friend of Tom, I can see the Character his Parents instilled in Him. When my Father Ken passed in 2007, Tommy found the obit, & made time from his very busy work and Family life to attend the Services. That gesture of Friendship & Respect will be Forever embedded in my memory. I'm Eternally Grateful to know such a Man, & I Truly Believe his dedication to God, Family, Honor, & hard work came directly from his Dad! So with the utmost heartfelt sincerity, I say to Mrs. Vasta, Tommy, Leslie, Sal, & The Entire Vasta Family, "May God's Peace Be With You All"! Mike McCabe & Family,(formerly of Dobbs Ferry NY), St. Cloud FL. PS: Tommy, call me when you find time my Good Friend. (407) 729-5933

The Vasta home was a "safe haven" to all of us boys who grew up in Croton. There was always one more chair open at the dinner table for anyone who wanted to join this amazing family. Mr. Vasta always conducted himself with grace, joy and most importantly, encouragement for us boys. He was a "rock" who I admired greatly because he was strong, yet humble. I am a better person because of Mr. Vasta and I am comforted knowing that he is in The Garden with The Master.
My love and encouragement to the entire Vasta family.
Love, Richard "Kel" Kelly, Croton HS class of 1975.

To All The Vasta Family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies and condolences at this time. Growing up in Harmon, on Oneida Avenue, I'm sure I speak for all my family in stating that Sal Vasta was an absolutely wonderful friend and neighbor. Personally, as I spent those years of my life in construction, Sal was a very knowledgeable and wise ear for me. Over the years since, I've never forgotten his kindness and thought of him often. Rest In Peace and may Prpetual Light shine upon him.
